Parking, etc.
Parking is scarce at West Point. Best is to
contact us
in advance for a special reserved place (shown in orange on the map). If you're here for a
conference or special event, please see the event parking guidelines.
Unfortunately the parking lot on Thayer Hall roof has no visitor space
on workdays. If you haven't called us in advance, try
Thayer Road or Buffalo Soldier Field areas (shown in red on the map).
See Staying At Hotel Thayer? below for ways
to get to Thayer Hall.
Our Military Police are serious about speed limits. Most areas
are 25 MPH, but in the academic area this drops to 15 MPH.
Gate procedures
Unless you have a Department of Defense pass, expect a brief
inspection of your vehicle while entering any gate at West Point. This
usually takes about a minute, but can be longer.
Directions to EE&CS from the West Point area
Route 9W, from either North or South. Take the West Point, Stony
Gate exit. Enter West Point going east through the gate.
Continue straight ahead down a long hill. You'll pass Michie
Stadium (on your right) where the ground levels. Continue straight
ahead. Just past Lusk Reservoir (on your right), follow the bend
to the left and start downhill again. Note the Cadet Chapel and
then Arvin Gym (on your right) and keep going. The road ends in a
"T" at a stop sign. You're looking out over the Hudson River.
Turn right. This is Washington Road. Continue past housing (on
your right), the tall flag pole (on your left), then a long bend to the
right around "the plain" parade field. Shortly after the plain
and opposite Lincoln Hall (on your left) is
an opportunity to turn right into Special Reserved Parking if you have
made advance arrangements with us. If you follow the bend of Washington Road, past Clinton Field,
Lincoln Hall, Cullum Hall, and the West Point Club (all on your left),
Thayer Hall is the next building. Continuing to the South takes
you under Mahan Hall, down Thayer Road to Buffalo Soldier Field, where
there is general visitor parking.
Route 218 North. Drive through the village of Highland
falls, and enter West Point going north through Thayer Gate. Proceed north
along Thayer Road. You'll pass under Mahan Hall through a short
tunnel. Emerging from the tunnel, Thayer Hall is on the right.
From the south (I-95 and Newark Airport)
While driving north on I-95, follow signs toward George Washington
Bridge and Fort Lee. After the final toll booth at
Exit 18W, move toward the right hand lane in order to exit on Route 46
for Fort Lee. Follow Route 46 for approximately 4 miles and take
the Fort Lee / Palisades Parkway exit. This is marked "Last Exit
Before Bridge." Do not take the Palisades Park exit, which is
about 1/2 mile before the correct one. The Fort Lee exit will
end at a traffic light. Stay in the middle lane and make the left
turn onto the overpass. Follow this road through 3 traffic lights,
staying toward the right lanes (but not making a right). After the
last light, there is a right bend exit (not a hard right) onto the
Palisades Parkway. Follow the Parkway until it ends at the Bear Mountain
traffic circle. From the Circle, take the exit toward West Point.
You'll be on Route 9W North. Follow it about 5 miles, first
through the small town of Ft. Montgomery and finally onto a high speed
portion. Now follow directions above for Route 9W.
From the west (NY Rt. 17 and Rt. 293, Central Valley)
Nearing West Point on Rt. 293, follow signs for West Point and Route
9W South. After merging onto 9W, the Stony Gate exit is about a
mile away. Follow Route 9W directions above.
From I-84, either direction
Take Exit 10 for Newburgh. Carefully follow Route 9W South
signs for about 12 miles over Storm King Mountain (many curves and
slopes). The West Point, Stony Gate exit will appear about a mile
after descending from the mountain. Follow directions above for
Route 9W.
From the New York Thruway I-87
Take Exit 17 for RT-17K and Union Avenue. After a few hundred
hards on 17K, enter I-84 East and follow I-84 directions above.
Staying at the Thayer Hotel?
The Thayer Hotel is just inside Thayer Gate at the south end of the
post. It's on the east (Hudson River) side of the road, and
parking is across the street. You must pass through the security checkpoint to
reach either one. It's a brisk 15-minute
walk north along Thayer Road to Thayer Hall and the Department of EE&CS. On most business days
6:15AM to 4:45PM, a free Shuttle Bus departs at :17 and :47 after the
hour at the street corner just north of the Hotel (near the security
checkpoint). Make sure you're on the Northbound bus. Ask the
driver to call out the Library Corner stop, which is only a
4-minute ride. Return trips on the Southbound bus are at :38 and :08 after the hour. [Top] |
